What is sustainable development?

The concept of sustainable development has its roots in some environmental concerns and was expressed in 1987 by the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission 1987) as:

“Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”

This made clear that the issue of sustainable development does not concern only a specific sector but encompasses a lot of sectors globally and identifies that sustainability should be achieved via an equivalent progress in the fields of the environment, economy and society, by taking into account restrictions such as the limited quantity of natural resources.
