UAE: Construction has begun on the first nuclear plant

Emirates-Nuclear-Energy-Corporation_ENEC_300200The construction of the first nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates has officially started today, and is expected to commence operations in the second reactor next year.

The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said that four reactors will be constructed at Barakah in the western zone of Abu Dhabi, of which the first will be in operation in 2017 and the remainder will begin in 2020. Barakah was chosen as the most suitable location for the plant, after thorough research of other areas. One reason is that the area has a low potential for earthquake as the region is inactive for 100 million years.

Mohamed Al Hommadi, CEO of ENEC said that “The nuclear program of the United Arab Emirates continues smoothly ensuring that our work in the area comply with local, federal and international regulations”.
