Boston-based company Altaeros has developed a new wind power generator in the form of a giant balloon which will offer a cheap renewable energy to communities off the grid.
The generator is enclosed in a huge balloon, which produces energy suspended at heights of thousands of meters from the ground. This is an aerodynamic fabric shell full of helium, which is wrapped around a conventional wind turbine of three blades. The system aims to exploit stronger winds via redirection, without human intervention. Also the shape of the balloon is designed so as to maximize the flow of wind within the generator, and the maintenance cost is low enough. The company’s aim was to exploit the strong winds at high altitudes without the cost of installing tall towers used in wind turbines grow in soil.
