We are used to seeing our celebrities sashaying down the red carpet, but these days, we are equally used to seeing them throwing their weight behind important social causes. Here is a list with celebrities that support environmental organizations, donating millions of dollars to the environment and are advocators of a green life style! See if your favourite celebrity is on the list and also do not hesitate to add someone that I may have forgotten!
13. Adrian Grenier
Adrian has well and truly joined the environmental entourage by co founding SHFT, a multimedia platform to convey more sustainable approaches to the way we live through video, art, culture and design. He has also been active in a number of eco campaigns ranging from saving the blue fin tuna to supporting hybrid cars. He even launched a beer business, called the Churchkey Can Co, which offers beer in 100 percent recyclable steel cans. Instead of using pull tabs (they can harm wildlife), the cans use an old-fashioned churchkey instead. Both eco friendly and innovative!
12. Jamie Oliver
British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver might not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of eco friendly celebrities, but his ethos of fresh, healthy eating comes from a belief in using sustainable produce. Not only has he lobbied governments over food quality, he has also pushed for better conditions for farmed animals, and has launched his own frozen fish range which comes from sustainable stock, a very timely issue given that some species are set to become extinct by 2050, should we not act fast!
11. Cate Blanchett
Aussie actress Cate Blanchett has been committed to tackling climate change for many years, even causing a stir in her home country for appearing in advertisements to support a price on carbon. She has been a member of the Conservation Foundation in Australia and both she and her husband, Andrew Upton, have joined the Climate Project. She also participated in a project with the Sydney Theatre Company, which saw a new solar array supply up to 70 percent of the power supply.
10. Gisele Bundchen
Gisele Bundchen may best be known for modelling but she has also entered the world of eco design, creating flip flops for the Ipanema brand and launching an eco friendly skincare line, Sejaa. Goodwill Environmental Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), she has actively campaigned for a number of issues and even won the Best International Green Celebrity Award in 2011. She also dedicates part of her website to environmental causes and even launched a ‘green’ blog back in 2008.
9. Dave Matthews Band
The band has gained the respect of the public as a leader in “green” tour. Offset the environmental impact of their journeys through the financing of afforestation and construction of wind farms. This year the tour «Eco-Village» in 40 cities inspire fans to learn about complex technologies and products that provide environmental benefits.
8. Barenaked Ladies
Since 2004 the band is using vehicles that use biofuels for the tours, while in live concerts creates informative «Eco-Villages» called «Barenaked Planets», to sensitize the public. Even the CDs are sold in bags that are 100% recyclable, while they recycle a lot, even the broken strings of their guitars. Behind the scenes there are always stocks of organic food and biodegradable materials.
Sting and his wife Trudie Styler founded the institution «Rainforest» for the protection of tropical forests and the people residing in these areas. The «Oceana», an organization working for the protection and preservation of ocean life, has honored them along with former U.S. President Bill Clinton for the commendable efforts.
6. Harrison Ford
As the vice president of the board «Conservation International», Harrison Ford had a leading role in raising public awareness for the environment by participating, inter alia, in an attempt to collect money for the fight against climate change. He has won a number of awards for his action.
5. Alicia Silverstone
Silverstone lives and breathes with an ecological way. The strictly vegetarian actress living in an eco-friendly home in Los Angeles with its own organic garden, and has its own line of natural cosmetics. In her book «The Kind Diet», Alicia Silverstone offers tips and secrets for an eco-friendly life.
4. Ed Begley Jr.
Begley is a pioneer in the “game” of ecology for decades. He drives an electric car since the 70s, while he is consuming in his home solar and wind energy. He has collaborated with many environmental organizations, presents the ecological broadcast «Living Like Ed» and issued the homonymous book with instructions for an eco-friendly life.
3. Brad Pitt
After the hurricane “Katrina” which devastated New Orlean, Brad Pitt created the program for green homes under the name «Make It Right». In 2009 the famous actor worked closely with U.S. President Barack Ompama to fund construction programs for “green” homes. He has also lent his voice to commercials for the environment.
2. Edward Norton
As a board member of the nonprofit organization «Community Partners» to create economic housing, Norton is considered as an important “lobbyist” to the construction of “green” houses, with connections that reach the U.S. Congress. Has presented a number of environmental shows «Strange Days» of «National Geographic». It is also a big fan of public transportation and it is not difficult for him to be spotted somewhere in the New York subway.
1. Leonardo Di Caprio
As one of the loyal environmentalists in Hollywood, Di Caprio has been distinguished by many environmental organizations for his work as an activist.
In 2007 Di Caprio undertook the writing, production and storytelling of the eco documentary “The 11th Hour”. Also founded the nonprofit organization «Leonardo Di Caprio Foundation» for the dissemination of ecological ideas. Among other notable movements, he has offered one million U.S. dollars to the wildlife conservation agency «Wildlife Conservation Society» and another one for the relief of the people of Haiti following the devastating earthquake.
In his personal life, Di Caprio has electric cars, he has also installed in his home solar panel and he is using common air flights, avoiding the purchase of a private jet for ecological reasons. He is so … green that he does not using deodorants and washed only twice a week (!) for water economy. Nevertheless, we still love him.
